Here’s Fergie, from Metro, with a chutefull of concrete being formed into my frost wall. This wall rests on an uninsulated footing that sits deep enough underground to be unaffected by frost penetration, and heave, in the wintertime. Pretty standard stuff here in New England.
The difference between this wall and a typical frost wall is that it will only hold up the roof of the building above it. The three living levels within the building will be supported by a second wall that will come to rest on an insulated concrete slab that will “float” within the footprint of the the frost walls. Sort of like a house within a house.
The outer footings, frost wall, and building wall will be cold(er). The inside wall and floating slab will be warm(er).
